Abhishek Sharma entered the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 as the top-ranked T20 batter in the world, carrying enormous expectations on his shoulders. Known for his fearless, attack-from-ball-one approach, Abhishek had been a key figure in India’s dominance in the shortest format. His explosive starts at the top often set the tone for big totals, whether India was batting first or chasing.

But the World Cup didn’t begin the way he would have hoped. Abhishek featured in three of India’s first four matches—missing one due to illness—and failed to score in all three outings. In the Super 8 clash against South Africa, he finally got off the mark but managed just 15 runs, extending a worrying lean patch.

With India facing must-win games, calls to drop him from the playing XI grew louder. However, the team management, led by captain Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir, chose to back him—a decision that would eventually pay off. Abhishek repaid that faith with a timely half-century against Zimbabwe, offering a glimpse of his true potential. Though he couldn’t build on it immediately and managed just 19 runs across the next two games, India continued their march to the final.

Reflecting on that challenging phase, Abhishek highlighted the role of Gambhir’s clarity in communication. “Gauti bhai is very honest in his communication, which I really respect,” he said. “During the tough phase, he told me not to overcomplicate things, but to stick to the role the team had given me and be brave enough to take the game on.”

He added, “He also reminded me that one good innings can change the momentum for both the player and the team.”

That moment arrived in the final against New Zealand. Abhishek rose to the occasion with a stunning knock of 52 off just 21 balls, helping India post a daunting total. He also chipped in with a wicket as India sealed a commanding 96-run victory.

“When you get out early a few times, the first reaction is disappointment,” he admitted. “I was lucky to have great support. The captain, coaches, and senior players kept reminding me to trust my game.”

Looking back, Abhishek described the tournament as a learning curve. “It was a tournament of extremes for me,” he said. “But that’s the nature of the game when you play an aggressive role. The biggest learning for me was staying balanced—mentally strong, regardless of success or failure,” he concluded.
