The IPL 2026 season will mark a significant shift in dynamics as Sanju Samson, Rajasthan Royals’ most capped player and highest run-scorer, turns out for Chennai Super Kings. The experienced wicketkeeper-batter made the switch from Rajasthan Royals in a high-profile trade ahead of the auction, bringing an end to a long and impactful association with the Jaipur-based franchise. At CSK, Samson is expected to take up the role of an opener under Ruturaj Gaikwad’s leadership, significantly boosting the team’s batting firepower.

While CSK gain a proven match-winner, Rajasthan Royals face a massive void — not just in terms of batting and wicketkeeping, but also leadership. Newly appointed captain Riyan Parag admitted that replacing Samson is virtually impossible. Drawing parallels with modern greats, Parag emphasised the value Samson brought to the side.

“I think if you talk about Sanju Bhaiya, we never think that we will replace that player. There is no replacement for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, and same is the case with Sanju Bhaiya,” Riyan Parag said during the IPL 2026 pre-season press conference.

Rather than looking for a direct replacement, RR are focusing on restructuring their approach. “We can find players with the same skill set and make them bat at the same place… but the focus this year is to plan better and finish games,” Parag added, highlighting one of the team’s key shortcomings from the previous season.

Interestingly, the IPL 2026 schedule adds immediate drama, with Rajasthan Royals set to face Chennai Super Kings in their opening fixture at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on March 30. The contest will be closely watched as Samson takes on his former franchise for the first time. RR will then face Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians in their next matches, followed by a clash against defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Samson recently addressed his decision to leave Rajasthan, stating it was a natural progression. “I left Rajasthan Royals because I felt my time in the team was over… but I will always give my best on the field,” he said, underlining his professional approach.
Having represented RR across multiple stints since 2013, including a brief phase with Delhi Capitals, Samson leaves behind a legacy that will be hard to replicate — both statistically and emotionally — as a new IPL chapter begins.
