Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has cautioned that IPL 2026 will be a far tougher test for Vaibhav Suryavanshi, as teams are now better prepared to counter the young Rajasthan Royals sensation. Suryavanshi took the cricketing world by storm in IPL 2025, making his debut at just 14 and announcing his arrival with a stunning century against Gujarat Titans.

Since then, he has continued his impressive run across levels, delivering consistent performances for India A and the U-19 side, reinforcing his status as one of the brightest young talents in Indian cricket. However, Pathan believes the real challenge begins now. With a full season ahead and greater exposure, opposition teams will come armed with specific strategies to contain him.
“100 percent, there will be challenges for Vaibhav Suryavanshi because teams will come with planning,” Irfan Pathan said. Drawing parallels with Abhishek Sharma, he highlighted how young batters often face tactical adjustments from opponents after initial success.

Despite the warning, Pathan remains optimistic about Suryavanshi’s potential. “He has the power, he scores runs wherever he goes — in U-19, India A, even in red-ball cricket,” he added, backing the youngster to deliver a strong season with more opportunities likely in IPL 2026.

A key aspect, according to Pathan, will be handling expectations and maintaining the right mindset. He stressed the importance of mentorship in shaping Suryavanshi’s growth, citing Rahul Dravid’s influence in guiding young players.
“Mentally, he should not feel that everything is easy. That’s very important. He needs someone around him as a mentor,” Irfan Pathan explained.

Looking at the bigger picture, Pathan underlined the rarity of longevity in modern cricket. At just 15, Suryavanshi potentially has a long career ahead — possibly spanning two decades — making it crucial to stay grounded and focused. For Rajasthan Royals, Suryavanshi remains a key figure, but managing his development carefully could define not just IPL 2026, but the future of a generational talent.
