As IPL 2026 approaches, Gujarat Titans have already set the tone with confidence and clarity, both on and off the field. At the franchise’s grand ‘Shubharambh 2026’ event in Ahmedabad, batting coach Matthew Hayden made a striking statement by naming Rahul Tewatia as the ideal successor to his iconic Mongoose bat — a symbol of raw power in T20 cricket.

For those who followed Hayden’s IPL journey, the Mongoose bat remains unforgettable. With its longer handle and shorter blade, it was designed to maximise bat speed and hitting power — a perfect fit for the shortest format. Hayden famously used it during IPL 2010, including a blistering 93 off 43 balls against the then Delhi Daredevils, an innings that showcased its destructive potential.
Drawing a parallel to the modern game, Matthew Hayden didn’t hesitate to back Tewatia’s finishing ability. “If I had to hand my Mongoose bat to someone from GT, it would have to be Rahul Tewatia,” he said. “He has the power. He does a very good job with the long bat. The margins in T20 cricket are five runs, 10 runs, and to have that power at the backend and frontend is crucial.”

Tewatia’s numbers may not always dominate headlines, but his impact is undeniable. Over the past few seasons, he has quietly established himself as one of GT’s most reliable finishers, scoring 591 runs in 43 innings at a strike rate exceeding 150. His ability to deliver under pressure makes him a vital cog in the Titans’ lower middle order.
Meanwhile, New Zealand all-rounder Glenn Phillips added a refreshing perspective with a candid take on fielding pressure. “I am worried when an easy catch comes my way. Hard catches I know I will take, but easy ones, I’m worried,” he admitted, offering a glimpse into the mental side of elite cricket.

Head coach Ashish Nehra, however, kept the messaging simple and consistent. He made it clear that Gujarat Titans are not looking to reinvent themselves this season. “I don’t think there’s a need to think differently this season. The players have to think and execute; I’m just here to guide,” he said.

Nehra further reinforced the franchise’s core philosophy: “From day one, our mindset has been clear — we are not here to participate, we are here to compete and win.” With a well-balanced squad featuring names like Shubman Gill, Jos Buttler, and Rashid Khan, Gujarat Titans head into IPL 2026 with a clear identity — one built on power, belief, and match-winning intent.
