In a late squad reshuffle ahead of IPL 2026, Chennai Super Kings have signed Australian left-arm pacer Spencer Johnson as a replacement for injured compatriot Nathan Ellis. Ellis, who was picked for ₹2 crore in the previous auction, has been ruled out of the upcoming season due to injury, forcing CSK to look for reinforcements in their pace department.

Spencer Johnson, who has prior IPL experience with the Gujarat Titans and the Kolkata Knight Riders, brings valuable T20 exposure to the squad. However, there is a catch—he won’t be available immediately. CSK confirmed via social media that the left-arm quick is expected to join the squad only around April 21–23, meaning he will miss the first half of the tournament.
The delay is largely due to Johnson’s recent recovery from a stress fracture in his back—an injury that kept him out of action for several months. South Australia head coach Ryan Harris provided a positive update on his progress, stating, “He got some good news… the crack in his back has healed.” After a frustrating period on the sidelines, Spencer Johnson has resumed bowling and is gradually building his workload.

Harris further explained that the focus is now on carefully managing Spencer Johnson’s return to competitive cricket. “He’s back bowling… but he’s obviously got to do a fair bit of bowling before he goes back into competitive cricket,” he noted. The coaching staff is ensuring that the pacer regains rhythm without risking another setback.

There have also been technical adjustments made to Spencer Johnson’s bowling action to reduce strain on his back. Harris revealed, “We’ve been tweaking a couple of things… trying to take a little bit of pressure off that back.” Encouragingly, even at around 60% intensity, Johnson has been generating good pace and rhythm, indicating a smooth recovery path.

In the absence of Spencer Johnson, CSK will rely heavily on their existing pace resources. Matt Henry and Zak Foulkes are expected to spearhead the attack early in the tournament, with support from England all-rounder Jamie Overton and domestic talents like Khaleel Ahmed and Mukesh Choudhary.
For CSK, Johnson’s mid-season arrival could prove crucial, especially during the business end of the tournament. If he returns at full fitness, his left-arm angle and pace variations could add a new dimension to the team’s bowling attack.
