Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has finally addressed the ongoing speculation around the team’s opening combination, confirming that he will partner Sanju Samson at the top in the Indian Premier League 2026 season. CSK’s top-order strategy had been under the scanner following Samson’s arrival and the emergence of young talent Ayush Mhatre.

The franchise had shifted its approach midway through the previous season, opting for aggressive young batters after a slow start. Mhatre grabbed the opportunity, scoring 240 runs at an impressive strike rate of 188.97 while opening the innings.
However, with Samson now in the mix, the team management appears to have made a tactical call. The 18-year-old is likely to move down to number three, a position that still allows him to play with freedom while accommodating a more experienced campaigner at the top.

Samson’s promotion as an opener is backed by his recent form on the international stage. The right-hander enjoyed a standout campaign in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, where he amassed 321 runs at a strike rate touching 200. His ability to attack from ball one and dominate the power play makes him a valuable asset in the opening slot.

For Gaikwad, the move ensures he continues in his preferred role. The CSK skipper has been one of the most consistent openers in the league, and his ability to anchor the innings complements Samson’s aggressive style. In his last full IPL season, Gaikwad scored 583 runs at an average of 53, reinforcing his importance at the top.

The Gaikwad-Samson pairing reflects a modern T20 approach—blending stability with attacking intent. A similar combination proved effective when Samson opened alongside Abhishek Sharma for India.
After a disappointing campaign last year, CSK will look for a strong comeback. They begin their IPL 2026 journey against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati, hoping their new opening combination delivers immediate results.
