Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra was at his witty best during a recent press conference, delivering a humorous take on the trade involving Sherfane Rutherford ahead of IPL 2026. The West Indies all-rounder made the move to the Mumbai Indians from the Gujarat Titans before the mini auction, sparking curiosity about the nature of the deal.

When asked whether Gujarat had explored a player swap with Mumbai or opted for a cash-only transaction, Ashish Nehra responded in his trademark cheeky style. “We were looking to get Jasprit Bumrah in exchange, but they [MI] did not agree,” he said, drawing laughter from those present.

While clearly said in jest, the remark underlined the immense value attached to a bowler like Jasprit Bumrah in today’s T20 landscape. Jokes aside, Rutherford’s exit does leave a noticeable gap in Gujarat’s middle order. The 27-year-old played a crucial role last season, scoring 291 runs in 13 matches at a strike rate of 157.

His ability to shift gears and finish games made him a dependable option. He also impressed on the international stage, particularly with a match-winning unbeaten 76 off 42 balls against England in the 2026 T20 World Cup.

However, the Gujarat Titans have taken proactive steps to plug that gap. They retained the dynamic Glenn Phillips and brought in experienced all-rounder Jason Holder during the auction. Both players offer versatility, capable of contributing with both bat and ball, which adds balance to the squad.

On the other hand, the Mumbai Indians have further strengthened their already power-packed middle order with Rutherford’s inclusion. That said, securing a spot in the playing XI won’t be easy, given the competition from overseas options like Mitchell Santner and Will Jacks.
