Mohammed Shami has made it clear that retirement is far from his mind, even as questions continue to surround his absence from the Indian team. The experienced pacer, currently representing Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2026, insists that he remains motivated and fully committed to the game despite spending over a year on the sidelines from international cricket.

Shami’s omission from recent national squads has raised eyebrows, especially given his consistent performances in domestic cricket. Turning out for Bengal during the 2025–26 season, he picked up an impressive 67 wickets across the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy, and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Despite these strong numbers, a return to the Indian setup has not materialised, with selection decisions reportedly resting with the Board of Control for Cricket in India and chief selector Ajit Agarkar. Addressing speculation about his future, Shami was firm in his stance.

“When I get tired, I will call it a day. But I am not even thinking of retirement right now because such thoughts pull you down,” he said in a recent interview. He emphasized that losing motivation is the real signal to step away from the sport. “The day I feel bored or lazy, I will leave cricket. But right now, I am enjoying the game and feeling positive,” he added.

The veteran pacer had been in contention for major assignments like the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and the England tour but chose to prioritise recovery from a foot injury. His reported differences with the selection committee over communication have only added to the uncertainty around his international future.
Now with LSG after a challenging stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad, Shami is focused on making a strong impact in IPL 2026. After managing just six wickets in nine matches last season, he sees this campaign as an opportunity for a fresh start.

“As a bowler, I will give my 100 per cent. I will fulfil my responsibilities and try to meet expectations. The rest is not in my control,” Mohammed Shami said, underlining his determination. With form, experience, and hunger still intact, Shami’s story is far from over—and IPL 2026 could be the stage for his resurgence.
