Tristan Stubbs cut a visibly frustrated figure during Delhi Capitals’ chase against Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk, with a key on-field decision disrupting his rhythm at a crucial stage of the match. The incident unfolded when Stubbs attempted to change his gloves midway through an over, citing the humid Chennai conditions that had made them uncomfortably wet.

However, the on-field umpires denied the request, citing regulations regarding delays in play. Under IPL rules, batters are expected to be ready when the bowler is set, and equipment changes that interrupt the flow of the game are generally not permitted.
The decision clearly unsettled the South African batter. With Delhi still in contention, Stubbs struggled to regain his composure and momentum, eventually falling in the closing stages of the chase. His frustration was evident as he exchanged words with the umpire before walking off, dropping his bat near the steps and striking his helmet in disappointment.

The reaction extended beyond the field. In the dugout, Nitish Rana and head coach Hemang Badani were seen in discussion with the fourth umpire, seeking clarification over the ruling.

Earlier in the evening, CSK had set a daunting target of 212/2, built around a commanding innings from Sanju Samson. The wicketkeeper-batter remained unbeaten on 115 off 56 balls, registering the first century of IPL 2026 and his maiden hundred for the franchise. He was well supported by Ayush Mhatre, who contributed a fluent 59, with the pair adding a crucial 113-run stand.
Delhi’s chase began with promise, as KL Rahul and Pathum Nissanka powered them to a brisk powerplay score. However, regular wickets stalled their progress as CSK’s bowlers adapted effectively to the conditions.

Stubbs’ fighting 60 kept Delhi in the hunt, but his dismissal proved decisive. CSK eventually bowled DC out for 189, sealing a 23-run victory — their first win of the season — in a match that combined strong performances with a touch of late controversy.
