It has been a season to forget so far for Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, and the IPL 2026 clash against Kolkata Knight Riders at Chepauk only added to his growing list of frustrations. Already struggling with the bat, Gaikwad’s troubles spilt onto the field as he dropped a straightforward catch to hand Sunil Narine an early lifeline.

CSK had started on a positive note with young pacer Anshul Kamboj making an immediate impact. He struck in his very first over, dismissing Finn Allen and putting KKR under early pressure. With Narine promoted to open the innings, the move signalled KKR’s intent to attack in the Powerplay.
Narine began aggressively, launching a six to get going, but soon mistimed a shot that went high towards mid-off. Positioned perfectly under the ball, Gaikwad seemed set to complete a routine catch. However, in a moment that summed up his current form, he spilled the simplest of chances, denying Kamboj a second wicket and allowing Narine to continue.

For a player known for his safe hands, the dropped catch raised eyebrows. It also reflected the lack of confidence that appears to be affecting Gaikwad’s overall game this season. His struggles with the bat—having failed to convert starts into meaningful scores—have already put him under scrutiny, and such fielding lapses only compound the pressure.

Despite the missed opportunity, CSK managed to bounce back through disciplined bowling. Khaleel Ahmed, who has been one of their brighter performers with the new ball, maintained tight lines and lengths. After two economical overs, he returned to deliver a crucial breakthrough. Bowling a pinpoint yorker, Khaleel cramped Narine for room as the batter attempted to free his arms.

The result was a faint edge that flew towards short third man, where Gurjapneet Singh held on to a clean catch. It finally brought an end to Narine’s stay and offered some relief to Gaikwad, who had earlier let the opportunity slip.
For Chennai Super Kings, Chepauk has no longer been the fortress it once was. And for their captain, the challenge now is not just tactical—but mental—as he looks to turn around a difficult IPL 2026 campaign.
