Chennai Super Kings have suffered a significant setback ahead of their high-profile IPL 2026 clash against Mumbai Indians, with young batter Ayush Mhatre ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a hamstring injury. The injury occurred during CSK’s recent fixture against Sunrisers Hyderabad, where Mhatre pulled up while batting, forcing him out of action at a crucial stage of the tournament.

The franchise confirmed the update in an official statement, revealing that Mhatre will require an extended rehabilitation period. “Ayush Mhatre has been ruled out of IPL 2026 due to a left hamstring injury sustained during the match against SRH. He is expected to undergo a recovery period of 6–12 weeks,” the statement read, wishing the youngster a speedy recovery.

Mhatre had been one of CSK’s standout performers this season, scoring 201 runs in six matches at an impressive strike rate of 177.87. His aggressive approach in the powerplay provided early momentum, making him a key figure in the batting lineup. His absence now leaves a noticeable gap at the top, especially as CSK look to revive their campaign.

Injuries have been a recurring concern for Chennai this season. Dewald Brevis missed the initial matches, while MS Dhoni has yet to feature due to a calf issue. The bowling unit has also been affected, with Nathan Ellis ruled out before the tournament and Khaleel Ahmed recently sidelined. Spencer Johnson has only just returned after recovering from injury, adding to the team’s challenges.

Currently placed eighth on the points table with just two wins from six games, CSK face an uphill task in the second half of the league stage. With eight matches remaining, the five-time champions must regroup quickly, but doing so without Mhatre will test their squad depth and adaptability in IPL 2026.
