Amid the collapse, Gaikwad remained composed, prioritising survival over aggression. His approach was far from flashy but exactly what the situation demanded. By the 10th over, he had crawled to 18 off 26 balls, focusing on anchoring the innings rather than chasing quick runs.

The shift came gradually. Gaikwad began rotating strike better and capitalising on loose deliveries. A crucial 59-run partnership with Shivam Dube (22) helped stabilise the innings and offered CSK a glimmer of hope. The skipper eventually brought up his half-century off 49 balls—his first of the IPL 2026 season.

During the knock, Gaikwad also reached a personal milestone, becoming one of the few CSK batters to cross 100 IPL sixes, joining elite company within the franchise’s history. He finished unbeaten on 75 off 60 balls, striking six boundaries and four sixes in a disciplined effort.

While the strike rate may raise eyebrows in modern T20 cricket, the context of the innings cannot be ignored.
