Ravichandran Ashwin has sparked a fresh debate around MS Dhoni’s availability in IPL 2026, making a bold prediction about when the legendary wicketkeeper-batter might return to action for Chennai Super Kings. Ashwin, who was part of the CSK setup last season, believes Dhoni is unlikely to feature unless the franchise is officially out of the playoffs race.

At present, CSK find themselves in a tricky position, sitting sixth on the points table with six points from eight matches. Their hopes of qualifying are still alive, but the margin for error is minimal. They need to win at least five of their remaining six league games to secure a spot in the top four.
Sharing his views on his YouTube channel, Ravichandran Ashwin suggested that CSK would avoid taking any risks with Dhoni while they are still mathematically in contention. “If CSK gets out of the tournament, then MS Dhoni might play. CSK are still in the tournament, so why will they take the risk now?” Ashwin said.

He also pointed out that despite inconsistent results, there are signs of improvement within the squad. “I still feel that CSK have a chance to qualify for the playoffs… their bowling is firing, and if their batting clicks, they can string together a few wins,” he added.

Dhoni, CSK’s most capped player and leading run-scorer in IPL history, has missed the entire season so far due to an injury suffered before the tournament began. Initially ruled out for a short period, his absence has extended longer than expected, leaving a significant void in the squad.
In his absence, Sanju Samson has stepped in as wicketkeeper-batter for the Men in Yellow and has delivered impressive performances, including two unbeaten centuries that have kept CSK competitive. Looking ahead, CSK are set for a high-voltage clash against the Mumbai Indians at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. The rivalry, often dubbed the IPL Clasico, adds further pressure on a side fighting to stay alive in the tournament.

Earlier this season, CSK dominated the fixture with a massive 103-run win at Wankhede, powered by Samson’s unbeaten 101 and a brilliant spell from Akeal Hosein. As the league stage intensifies, all eyes remain on whether Dhoni will return—or if CSK can keep their playoff hopes alive without him.
