The debate around Jacob Bethell’s IPL 2026 stint with Royal Challengers Bengaluru has gathered pace after strong backing from Kevin Pietersen, Stuart Broad and Jos Buttler. The England youngster has spent much of the season on the bench, prompting Alastair Cook to suggest that he should head back to county cricket if he was not going to get regular game time. But that view has been firmly pushed back by some of England’s biggest modern voices.

Pietersen was the first to fire back, arguing that Cook was missing the bigger picture. He said that simply being around the IPL environment, training with elite cricketers and absorbing the standards of a top franchise can be hugely valuable for a young player’s growth.

“Alastair Cook has absolutely NO IDEA what it’s like to be in the IPL,” Kevin Pietersen posted on X. “What it’s like to always be around the best players in the world. So his opinion on Jacob Bethell doesn’t matter at all Stay in India, Jacob.”

Bethell did not feature in RCB’s playing XI for the first six matches of the season, but he has since played in their last three games. During that stretch, he has scored 39 runs, which has kept the discussion alive about whether he is better served by match time or by learning in an elite dressing room.

Buttler also weighed in on the issue and echoed Pietersen’s view. Speaking on the *For The Love Of Cricket* podcast hosted by Stuart Broad, the Gujarat Titans wicketkeeper-batter said that anyone who has not experienced the IPL first-hand may find it difficult to judge what the tournament offers to a young cricketer. He also pointed out that Bethell made a professional commitment to the franchise.

“I think unless you’ve played in the IPL and been here and experienced it, it’s very difficult to say that’s the best place to be,” Jos Buttler said. “That old school way of thinking would be, you’re not playing there, get back and play cricket. But you’ve put your name in the auction. You’ve signed a contract that you’re going to be here, and you’ve got to honour that contract as well.”

Broad supported that line of thought too, highlighting that Bethell remains part of England’s Test plans and is already in a strong position internationally.

“Ultimately, from his point of view, he is in the England team,” Stuart Broad said. “His last Test match innings, or Test match, he got a hundred in Sydney. He’s not going to get in the RCB team by not being there.”

Buttler also noted that modern cricket demands flexibility, and that Bethell will still benefit from batting volume, preparation and exposure even if he is not playing every match. With England duties ahead, the left-hander’s IPL experience could still prove valuable in the long run.
