Chennai Super Kings delivered a commanding performance at Chepauk, defeating Mumbai Indians by eight wickets to keep their IPL 2026 playoff hopes alive. The win was built on composed half-centuries from captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and rising star Kartik Sharma, who guided the chase with maturity beyond his years.

Chasing a target of 160, CSK made a bold call by promoting the 20-year-old Kartik Sharma ahead of more established names like Shivam Dube and Dewald Brevis. The move paid off brilliantly. Kartik remained unbeaten on 54 off 40 balls, striking four boundaries and three sixes, anchoring the innings alongside Gaikwad with calm assurance.
Head coach Stephen Fleming was quick to highlight the youngster’s temperament, which he believes is just as important as raw talent at this level. Speaking after the match, Fleming emphasised how carefully CSK have managed Kartik’s development.

“Young players need to be introduced at the right time. It’s a big stage, regardless of what they’ve done in domestic cricket. Understanding their mindset is crucial,” Stephen Fleming explained.
He added that Kartik’s journey hasn’t been straightforward, but his hard work is now paying dividends.

“His introduction was challenging, and he had a phase where he had to step back and work on his game. Today was a reward for that effort,” he said. Stephen Fleming also pointed out that the franchise’s investment in Kartik during the auction reflected the belief in his potential, something that was evident in this high-pressure game. “He’s a fine player. You could see both his skill and temperament tonight, and he’ll only improve from here,” Fleming noted.
The match also marked the IPL debut of Ramakrishna Ghosh, who impressed with the ball. The all-rounder delivered three tidy overs, conceding 24 runs and picking up the key wicket of Suryakumar Yadav.

Stephen Fleming acknowledged Ghosh’s rapid progress behind the scenes. “His improvement in recent weeks has been very noticeable. He’s trained exceptionally well, and he’s someone who can contribute with both bat and ball,” he said. With this crucial win, CSK move to sixth place on the points table with eight points, setting up an important clash against Delhi Capitals as they push for a late surge in IPL 2026.
