Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants find themselves in a precarious position midway through IPL 2026, with both sides languishing at the bottom of the points table. Placed ninth and tenth, respectively, their playoff hopes are rapidly fading, and unless there is a dramatic turnaround, elimination looks increasingly likely. Mumbai Indians, with just two wins from nine matches, are staring at a near-impossible path to qualification.

Even if they win all their remaining games, they can only reach 14 points—typically not enough to secure a playoff berth. For a team packed with international stars and proven match-winners, this campaign has been nothing short of underwhelming. Frequent changes—using as many as 23 players in nine games—highlight issues with team balance, selection clarity, and form.

Despite the struggles, head coach Mahela Jayawardene remains optimistic, insisting the team hasn’t given up yet. However, the dip in the form of key players, especially Suryakumar Yadav, has hurt MI significantly. The dynamic batter, who was among the top performers last season, has managed just 183 runs at an average of 20.33, failing to convert starts into impactful innings. Jayawardene, though, continues to back him, calling it a phase that will pass.

Lucknow Super Giants haven’t fared much better. Led by Rishabh Pant, the side has struggled for consistency, particularly with the bat. Their top performers—Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram—have failed to match the output of leading run-scorers this season. Meanwhile, big-money signings like Pant and Nicholas Pooran have not delivered consistently, raising questions about the team’s overall batting structure.

Heading into their clash at Wankhede, conditions are expected to favour batting more than the surfaces seen in Chennai. While Mumbai might back themselves to post a competitive total, Lucknow’s ability to chase under pressure remains uncertain.

Historically, Lucknow have dominated this fixture, winning six of their eight encounters against Mumbai, including a strong record at Wankhede. With both teams desperate to stay alive, this contest could define the direction of their IPL 2026 campaigns.

The Mumbai Indians are still awaiting clarity on Rohit Sharma, who continues to recover from a right hamstring injury sustained three weeks ago. With head coach Mahela Jayawardene still hopeful of a late push for the playoffs, MI are unlikely to rest key players, especially Jasprit Bumrah.

Bowling has been a concern for Mumbai this season. Trent Boult, usually a Powerplay specialist, is yet to pick up a wicket in that phase and has leaked runs at an economy of 13.62. In contrast, youngster AM Ghazanfar has impressed, leading the side with 11 wickets, including five in the Powerplay. MI could look to combine Bumrah’s experience with Ghazanfar’s form upfront.

Probable XII: Ryan Rickelton (wk), Will Jacks, Naman Dhir, Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya (c), Krish Bharat, Jasprit Bumrah, Ashwani Kumar, AM Ghazanfar, Raghu Sharma and Corbin Bosch.

For Lucknow Super Giants, most players are available, with Josh Inglis joining the squad recently. Their seam attack—featuring Mohsin Khan, Prince Yadav and Mohammed Shami—has been among the most effective in the Powerplay. Notably, Inglis also holds a favourable match-up against Bumrah, adding intrigue to this key contest.

Probable XII: Mitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram, Rishabh Pant (c & wk), Josh Inglis, Ayush Badoni, Himmat Singh, Mukul Choudhary, Manimaran Siddharth, Mohsin Khan, Mohammed Shami, Digvesh Rathi and Prince Yadav
