Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have been dealt a setback in their IPL 2026 campaign, with explosive opener Phil Salt flying back to the UK for scans on a finger injury. The England international has already missed the last three matches, and his absence could stretch further depending on the results. For a side looking to defend its maiden IPL title, this comes at a tricky stage of the tournament.

Salt’s injury has opened the door for Jacob Bethell, who has stepped in as a makeshift opener. The left-hander has been handed an extended run at the top, offering RCB a slightly different dynamic compared to Salt’s aggressive right-handed approach.

While the team management hasn’t officially detailed the injury, reports suggest Phil Salt hurt a finger on his left hand while attempting a diving stop near deep backward square leg during RCB’s home loss to Delhi Capitals on April 18.

Before the setback, Salt had been one of RCB’s standout performers. He scored 202 runs in six innings at a striking rate of 168.33, consistently providing rapid starts that set the tone for the innings. His absence has forced the team to rethink their top-order strategy at a crucial point in the season.

There is, however, cautious optimism within the camp that Phil Salt will recover in time to rejoin the squad later this month. His return could be vital as RCB push to stay in contention and build momentum in the second half of the tournament.

The injury is particularly frustrating given Phil Salt had spoken highly of the environment under director Mo Bobat, head coach Andy Flower, and mentor Dinesh Karthik, where he appeared to have rediscovered his best form.

Currently led by Rajat Patidar, RCB are on a short break after their defeat to the Gujarat Titans, regrouping before their next clash against the Lucknow Super Giants.
