Ravichandran Ashwin heaped praise on the Gujarat Titans for their composure under pressure after a tense four-wicket win over Punjab Kings in IPL 2026. Chasing a competitive target of 164 in Ahmedabad, GT held their nerve to cross the line with just one ball to spare—yet another example of their ability to stay calm when the margins get tight.

Speaking after the match, Ashwin highlighted that Gujarat’s strength lies not in flashy cricket but in clarity and execution. He pointed out how their batting approach is built around reading conditions and pacing the chase smartly rather than chasing unrealistic targets.

“Gujarat Titans were once again incredibly composed in the way they approached the chase,” Ravichandran Ashwin said. “Their batting may not always look explosive, but it’s highly methodical and built around understanding conditions. On pitches like these, where 160-170 is a competitive score, it’s about controlling the game and executing your plans rather than chasing big numbers.”

That clarity, according to Ashwin, has been the backbone of Gujarat’s consistent performances over multiple IPL seasons. He credited both the management and players for sticking to a well-defined process, even in high-pressure situations.

“They’ve shown remarkable consistency over the years with this approach. Credit goes to both the management and the players for sticking to their process and getting the job done under pressure.”

A crucial turning point in the chase was the innings played by Washington Sundar. Walking in at a tricky phase, Sundar anchored the innings with an unbeaten 40 off 23 balls, guiding GT home with maturity and control.

“Washington Sundar’s innings was extremely important because it addressed a key question around Gujarat Titans’ middle order,” Ravichandran Ashwin explained. “While a lot of their runs come from the top three, contributions like this show the depth they have. Sundar has often been used as a flexible option, but he stepped up, handled the pressure well, and ensured the chase was completed. It might not have looked flashy, but it was a very composed and clinical effort.”

Earlier in the match, Punjab Kings posted 163/9 after recovering from early setbacks, but a disciplined bowling performance led by Jason Holder, who picked up four wickets, ensured the total remained within reach. In response, GT built their chase through key contributions, including a steady knock from Sai Sudharsan, before Sundar finished things off. It wasn’t a dominant win, but it perfectly summed up Gujarat Titans’ identity—calm, calculated, and consistently effective under pressure.
