Tilak Varma lit up the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala during the IPL 2026 clash between the Punjab Kings and the Mumbai Indians by launching the night’s biggest six. The left-hander picked the length early, got right under one from Yuzvendra Chahal, and sent it soaring 106 metres into the stands. It was not just a crowd-pleaser, but also the first boundary conceded by Chahal after a spell of disciplined bowling.

The strike came at a key stage of the innings, with Chahal finishing his quota and Tilak finding the perfect moment to break the pressure. The six also put him level with Tim David and David Miller for the longest hit of IPL 2026 so far, underlining just how cleanly he was striking the ball on a surface that had not made batting easy.
Tilak’s knock has been crucial for the Mumbai Indians, who were trying to recover after a mixed start to their chase. With wickets falling at the other end and the required rate still demanding control, the young batter had to combine patience with power. He was doing exactly that, reaching 56 off 27 balls and holding the innings together while Sherfane Rutherford supported him at the other end.

Earlier, Mumbai Indians were forced to make do without Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav, which meant Jasprit Bumrah took over leadership duties for the night. MI opted to bowl first after winning the toss and made two changes, bringing in Shardul Thakur and Rutherford.

Punjab Kings, meanwhile, arrived on the back of four straight defeats and made three changes of their own. Xavier Bartlett, Vishnu Vinod and Azmatullah Omarzai were handed chances. After being put in to bat, PBKS got a decent start through Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh, although Arya fell for 22, and the innings later lost momentum in the middle overs. Prabhsimran still top-scored with 57, helping Punjab reach a competitive total.

Mumbai’s chase began positively too, with Ryan Rickelton playing a brisk 48-run knock, but Rohit Sharma struggled for timing and managed only 25 off 26 balls. Naman Dhir also fell early, continuing his poor run in the field and with the bat.
At the time of writing, Tilak Varma and Will Jacks were at the crease with MI needing 15 more runs. With the game heading into a tense finish, the contest remained wide open.
