Michael Vaughan has strongly criticised the ECB’s handling of Jofra Archer and the growing influence of franchise cricket over international commitments, raising fresh concerns ahead of England’s home Test series against the New Zealand national cricket team. Speaking on Cricbuzz, Vaughan questioned the agreement between the England and Wales Cricket Board and the Board of Control for Cricket in India that has allowed several England players to remain in the Indian Premier League despite England preparing for their first Test of the summer at Lord’s on June 4.

England recently announced their squad for the opening Test against New Zealand, with Archer once again absent as the ECB continues to manage his workload following multiple injury setbacks. While Archer remains one of England’s most dangerous red-ball bowlers, especially at Lord’s where he has produced memorable performances in the past, Vaughan believes the issue now goes beyond fitness management.

The former England captain made it clear that his criticism was aimed more at the system and scheduling decisions rather than Archer himself. “I’m sure he’ll be in the squad for the second Test. It comes midway through June. I think we have a problem in English cricket at the moment because Jofra was obviously staying for the full IPL. There’s some contract that the ECB have done with the BCCI that’s allowing all our players to stay for the duration,” Vaughan said.

Michael Vaughan argued that centrally contracted England players should prioritise international cricket, particularly Test matches, over franchise tournaments. According to him, if players are retained and financially supported by the ECB for extended periods, national duty must remain the top priority.

“If that’s the case, I have a problem with England’s contracts because Jofra has been looked after by them for a few years now on a very handsome contract. So who holds the key to that? I believe the international contract outweighs any franchise,” he added. While Michael Vaughan admitted that franchise leagues like the IPL have transformed cricket financially and professionally for players, he warned that the game could face long-term problems if Test cricket begins taking a back seat.

“Look, all these franchise leagues are fantastic. I love them for the players. But I do feel that if we start to put domestic leagues over and above a Test match, I think there’s a real problem now,” Michael Vaughan stated.

The former opener also acknowledged that players are often caught in difficult situations when bilateral schedules clash with franchise commitments. However, he insisted that the ECB must take a stronger stance if it wants England’s best players available for major Test series.

“England have got to make a decision because many have spoken out about it in the last week. We feel that if you’re playing for England in your Test match, players should be back home playing for England. That’s what your central contract says you should be doing,” he said. Michael Vaughan even suggested that if the ECB plans to consistently allow players to complete their IPL contracts, then England may need to rethink its international calendar entirely.

“If there is an agreement that the ECB have done with the BCCI, well, I think you’ve got to start your Test summer somewhere a little bit later then,” Vaughan explained. He also framed the debate from a team-management perspective, saying both Rob Key and Brendon McCullum would naturally want England’s strongest bowling attack available from the opening Test itself. For Vaughan, though, the larger concern remains protecting the value and status of Test cricket in the modern era dominated by franchise leagues.
