Gujarat Titans (GT) delivered one of their most dominant performances of IPL 2026 with a crushing 89-run victory over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The emphatic win not only strengthened GT’s push for a top-two finish but also reinforced their status as one of the strongest title contenders heading into the playoffs. Batting first, Gujarat Titans piled up a massive 229/4 in 20 overs, powered by brilliant half-centuries from Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill, and Jos Buttler.

The trio completely dismantled the CSK bowling attack, which struggled to contain the relentless scoring rate throughout the innings. Former India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin, meanwhile, reflected on the growing competitiveness of the IPL and suggested that sustained dominance in the tournament has become increasingly difficult because of the rising standards across franchises.
“The entire IPL tournament has become much tighter. Teams now make fewer tactical errors, perform well at auctions, understand their home conditions better, and build stronger strategies,” Ravichandran Ashwin said. “So, winning two or three titles in five years is not going to be easy anymore,” he added.

On the field, GT’s opening pair of Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan once again provided the perfect foundation. Gill played the aggressor early, racing to his half-century in just 28 balls, while Sudharsan anchored the innings with another composed knock. The pair crossed the 100-run mark before the halfway stage and added 125 runs for the opening wicket before Spencer Johnson finally dismissed Gill for a superb 64 off 37 balls. Sudharsan then continued his outstanding form, bringing up his fifth consecutive half-century of the season.
Jos Buttler added further misery for CSK with a blistering, unbeaten 57 off just 27 deliveries. Alongside Sudharsan, he stitched together an 84-run stand that pushed Gujarat beyond the 220-run mark. Sudharsan eventually departed for a magnificent 84 off 53 balls, while Buttler remained unbeaten to finish the innings strongly.

In reply, Chennai Super Kings suffered a disastrous start after Mohammed Siraj removed Sanju Samson with the very first ball of the chase. Siraj then dismissed Ruturaj Gaikwad and Urvil Patel during a fiery opening spell that completely derailed CSK inside the powerplay.
Matt Short attempted a counterattack with 24 off 14 balls before Kagiso Rabada ended his stay. Shivam Dube later provided brief resistance with a sensational 47 off only 17 balls, smashing four boundaries and four sixes to temporarily revive CSK’s hopes.

However, Shubman Gill produced another highlight moment of the match with a stunning diving catch to dismiss Dube off Rashid Khan’s bowling. Rashid eventually finished with three wickets, while Rabada also claimed a three-wicket haul as Chennai Super Kings collapsed for 140 in just 13.4 overs.
The heavy defeat marked one of the worst losses in CSK’s IPL history and officially ended their disappointing IPL 2026 campaign.
