Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes MS Dhoni could be the ideal candidate to take over as Chennai Super Kings head coach if Stephen Fleming eventually steps away from the role following CSK’s disappointing IPL 2026 campaign. The five-time champions failed to qualify for the playoffs after managing just six wins in 14 league matches under Ruturaj Gaikwad’s captaincy.

Chennai ended the season with three consecutive defeats, leading to growing discussions around the franchise’s future direction and possible changes within the coaching setup. With reports suggesting CSK management will review the reasons behind the team’s underwhelming season, attention has naturally shifted toward head coach Stephen Fleming, who has been one of the franchise’s most influential figures over the years.
Fleming recently admitted that coaches are ultimately judged by results and said any decision regarding his future would rest entirely with the franchise management.

Amid the speculation, Ashwin responded humorously to a fan on X who joked that the former CSK spinner should not become the next head coach because he would reveal the playing XI and strategies on his YouTube channel before every game.
Absolutely agree with you!
I will announce 11 and make sure the opposition know the bowling and batting plans as well.🤝🤝
In fact, the above will ensure that the anti corruption unit will take me to task & will also ensure my own failure.

“Absolutely agree with you! I will announce 11 and make sure the opposition knows the bowling and batting plans as well,” Ravichandran Ashwin replied jokingly. However, the veteran spinner then hinted at who he believes should naturally take over if Fleming eventually leaves. “Adding on: When Msd is there, why are you searching for anyone at all?” Ashwin added.

Dhoni, meanwhile, did not play a single match during IPL 2026 due to multiple injury setbacks. The legendary wicketkeeper-batter initially missed the season with a calf strain and later suffered a thumb injury after recovering during rehabilitation.
Despite staying away from the field throughout the season, Dhoni’s presence around the squad and his influence within the franchise remain enormous as speculation over his long-term future with CSK intensifies.
