The IPL vs County cricket debate has exploded once again, with former Australia pacer Jason Gillespie launching a scathing attack on Kevin Pietersen over comments involving England youngster Jacob Bethell. The heated exchange began after former England captain Sir Alastair Cook questioned whether Bethell should continue sitting on the bench in the IPL instead of returning home for valuable county cricket experience ahead of England’s summer.

Bethell, who was part of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru squad during IPL 2026, spent most of the season out of the playing XI despite being regarded as one of England’s brightest young batting talents. Speaking on the Stick to Cricket podcast, Cook suggested that regular game time in county cricket would benefit the youngster far more than remaining unused in the IPL environment.
“Bethell shouldn’t really be it because he’s not opening. He’s sitting at the IPL not doing anything. Ideally, he could come back and open for Warwickshire to help England,” Alastair Cook had said.

Kevin Pietersen, however, strongly disagreed with Cook’s opinion and defended the value of learning inside an IPL dressing room. Taking to the social media platform X, the former England batter claimed Cook did not understand what it was like to be part of the IPL setup.
“Alastair Cook has absolutely NO IDEA what it’s like to be in the IPL,” Kevin Pietersen wrote. “Stay in India, Jacob. Even though you’re not playing, you’re learning and will be a way better player.”

Now Jason Gillespie has entered the debate and openly criticised Pietersen for dismissing Cook’s viewpoint. Speaking on The Fast Bowling Cartel podcast alongside Glenn McGrath and Damien Fleming, the former Australia fast bowler sarcastically mocked Pietersen’s reaction and backed Cook’s original argument.
“The nerve of Sir Alastair Cook to suggest something like that,” Jason Gillespie said sarcastically. “KP has gone off the deep end and stated that Sir Alastair Cook’s opinion doesn’t matter because he’s never been to the IPL and would not know.” Gillespie insisted Cook had made a completely reasonable point because match practice remains crucial for a young player’s growth. He also accused Pietersen of overreacting while defending franchise cricket.

“I think Sir Alastair Cook had a valid point, but the way KP absolutely hammered him for having an opinion, give me a spell, boys. Absolute nonsense,” Gillespie added. The former Australian pacer then took a brutal swipe at Pietersen’s repeated claims about helping transform modern franchise cricket. “He reckons he paved the way for everyone. Thank you, Kevin, for the stars above, the sun, the moon and the air we breathe,” Gillespie joked sarcastically. “It was all about cash for you, Kev. Give me a break.”
Meanwhile, Jacob Bethell has already left the RCB camp ahead of the IPL 2026 playoffs after suffering a finger injury and has returned to England.
