England have received a timely boost ahead of the start of their home Test summer, with rising batting star Jacob Bethell expected to recover in time for the opening Test against New Zealand at Lord’s, beginning on June 4. The 22-year-old left-hander recently returned to England from the IPL 2026 season after sustaining an injury to his left ring finger while representing Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Bethell had been part of the RCB squad that topped the league-stage standings but departed before the playoffs to undergo treatment and rehabilitation under the supervision of England’s medical staff. According to an official ECB update, the injury is not considered serious, and Bethell remains on track to feature in the first Test of the highly anticipated three-match series against New Zealand.
“Following a review of Jacob Bethell’s left ring finger injury, he will continue to be monitored in the lead-up to the Rothesay first Test against New Zealand, starting on June 4 at Lord’s, and he is expected to be fit to play,” the ECB confirmed in a statement.

Bethell’s availability would be a major positive for England, especially after the youngster cemented his place in the Test setup earlier this year with a sensational 154 in the fifth Ashes Test in Sydney. His composure, strokeplay, and adaptability against high-quality bowling have quickly established him as one of England’s most exciting young red-ball prospects.

Should he regain full fitness in time, Bethell is expected to slot straight back into England’s batting order at number three. His return would also provide much-needed balance to the lineup ahead of a demanding home season that includes three Tests against New Zealand, followed by another three-match series against Pakistan later in August.

Meanwhile, England do have backup options ready if Bethell suffers any setback before the Lord’s Test. Somerset batter James Rew is reportedly in contention for a maiden international call-up after an impressive County Championship campaign in which he has scored 478 runs in six matches.
Bethell, who missed the Zimbabwe Test last summer due to IPL commitments, is now aiming to become a regular feature in England’s long-term Test plans.
