England head coach Brendon McCullum has provided a major fitness update on Jacob Bethell ahead of the first Test against New Zealand, confirming that the young all-rounder is fully fit and available for selection at Lord’s. Bethell recently cut short his stint with IPL 2026 champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru to return home and undergo assessment with England’s medical team before the start of the highly anticipated Test series.

His fitness had become a talking point after concerns emerged following his return from India. However, Brendon McCullum has now put those concerns to rest, revealing that Bethell trained without any issues and is ready to take his place in England’s playing XI.
“He was operating at gully in our training yesterday and he is absolutely fine, so there are no problems there. He should be able to bowl as well, which is quite handy for us to have another bowling option in the top order,” Brendon McCullum said.

Bethell heads into the series with growing expectations after emerging as one of England’s standout performers during the recent Ashes tour of Australia. Despite England’s 4-1 series defeat, the left-hander impressed with his composure and strokeplay, finishing the tour with a memorable century in the final Test in Sydney.

The 21-year-old has played six Tests so far and averages 43, highlighting his potential at the highest level. England has now entrusted him with the crucial No. 3 position, a role that places significant responsibility on his shoulders as the team begins another important red-ball campaign.
While Bethell’s first-class experience remains limited, McCullum believes the youngster’s temperament and preparation make him well-equipped for the challenge ahead. According to reports, he has played only one County Championship match since August 2024, but England’s management remains confident in his ability.

“His game looks in good order. He has a calm head and is a very methodical preparer in terms of the mental side of the game,” Brendon McCullum added. With England looking to start the New Zealand series strongly, all eyes will be on Bethell as he prepares for one of the biggest opportunities of his Test career.
