India’s quest for a maiden ICC World Test Championship (WTC) title has become increasingly challenging, but head coach Gautam Gambhir remains confident that his team has the quality and determination to stay in the race for the final. After finishing as runners-up in two of the first three WTC cycles, India entered the current edition with high expectations. The campaign began on a positive note with a hard-fought 2-2 draw in England, followed by a convincing 2-0 series sweep over the West Indies at home.

However, a shock whitewash against South Africa in November significantly dented India’s qualification hopes and pushed them down the standings. Despite the setback, Gambhir believes India still possess enough talent and depth to mount a strong comeback in the remainder of the cycle. Speaking to reporters, the India head coach expressed confidence in the squad’s ability to recover from difficult phases and compete for a place in the WTC final.
“Look, very optimistic and we’re always optimistic. Till you have the opportunity to qualify for the World Test Championship final, we’re always optimistic because we know the kind of quality we have and the kind of talent we have. I don’t think there’s any reason not to believe that we cannot win the World Test Championship,” Gautam Gambhir said.

He further highlighted the hunger within the dressing room, insisting that a couple of disappointing series should not overshadow the potential of the current group. “That is what not only me but everyone sitting in that dressing room believes in. Yes, we can have one or two bad series here and there, but we know the kind of talent and how much hunger we have in that dressing room,” he added.

India currently occupy sixth place in the World Test Championship standings with a points percentage of 48.15. While qualification remains achievable, the margin for error has narrowed considerably. The team still has nine Tests left in the ongoing cycle, including two away matches in Sri Lanka, a challenging two-Test series in New Zealand, and a crucial five-match home series against Australia next year.

To realistically remain in contention for a spot in the final, India may need to win at least seven of those nine matches. The task becomes even tougher considering four Tests will be played overseas, including in New Zealand, where India have not registered a Test victory since 2009. With the road ahead packed with challenges, India’s WTC ambitions will depend on consistency, adaptability, and the belief that Gambhir insists still runs strongly through the dressing room.
