India received a major boost in the latest ICC Test Rankings update released on June 10, with captain Shubman Gill emerging as the country’s highest-ranked Test batter. The stylish right-hander climbed two places to reach eighth position in the world rankings with 743 rating points, underlining his growing stature in international cricket.

Gill’s rise comes on the back of his outstanding performance in the one-off Test against Afghanistan in Mullanpur. Leading the side from the front, the Indian skipper produced a commanding innings of 126 runs off 177 deliveries. His century, alongside KL Rahul’s hundred, laid the foundation for India’s historic innings-and-300-run victory, the biggest win by innings margin in the team’s Test history.

The latest rankings update highlights Gill’s consistent progress in red-ball cricket and signals the beginning of a new era for India’s batting unit. With senior players gradually moving into the latter stages of their careers, Shubman Gill continues to establish himself as one of the pillars of India’s future.

Meanwhile, England star Harry Brook has overtaken teammate Joe Root to become the world’s No.1 ranked Test batter. Brook claimed the top spot following England’s victory over New Zealand at Lord’s. Despite managing just a half-century and a duck in the match, Brook benefited from Root’s rare failure, as the former England captain scored only nine runs across both innings.

In the bowling rankings, India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah remains firmly at the summit. The fast bowler continues to hold the No.1 Test bowler ranking with an impressive 870 rating points, despite being rested for the Afghanistan Test.

India also enjoyed positive movement in the bowling charts through Kuldeep Yadav. The left-arm wrist-spinner moved up one place to 12th in the world after his impactful performance against Afghanistan. Kuldeep claimed three wickets in the second innings and played a crucial role in India’s dominant victory.
