England have taken a decisive step ahead of the second Test against New Zealand, with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) excluding Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson from the squad following the ongoing investigation into a nightclub incident that occurred after the first Test at Lord’s. The match, scheduled at The Oval, will now see Joe Root return as England’s Test captain for the first time since he stepped down from the role in 2022.

The controversy stems from an alleged breach of team protocols involving Stokes and Atkinson, who reportedly violated the squad’s curfew rules during a night out in Chelsea. The incident also involved a Saracens academy rugby player and a member of England’s security staff, who suffered injuries during an altercation and required medical treatment.

With the ECB’s investigation still underway, both players have been deemed unavailable for selection. In an official statement, the ECB confirmed that neither Stokes nor Atkinson would be considered for the second Test, emphasising that the decision was made while inquiries into the matter continue. Their absence has forced England to make significant changes to the squad, with Jofra Archer and Jordan Cox earning call-ups for the crucial encounter against New Zealand.

Atkinson’s omission is particularly notable given his match-winning performance at Lord’s, where he claimed a five-wicket haul in the second innings to help England secure victory. Meanwhile, Root’s appointment as captain comes under unusual circumstances. Although vice-captain Harry Brook was considered an option, England opted for Root’s vast leadership experience.

The former captain had previously expressed reluctance to resume the role, even when Stokes faced a potential absence during last year’s Pakistan tour due to illness. The squad announcement also brings a long-awaited opportunity for Jordan Cox. The Essex batter is finally in line for his England Test debut after injury setbacks denied him previous chances.

Despite limited recent red-ball cricket, Cox arrives with valuable game time from England’s one-day series against South Africa and a recent Vitality Blast appearance.

For Archer, the recall was far from guaranteed. Head coach Brendon McCullum had indicated after the Lord’s Test that the fast bowler was not an automatic selection. However, Atkinson’s suspension opened the door for Archer, who had earlier been overlooked after prioritizing his IPL commitments with Rajasthan Royals.
