India’s preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup have reportedly hit an early hurdle, with senior players and team management not entirely aligned on the roadmap for the marquee tournament. With several experienced stars potentially approaching their final World Cup campaign, discussions around the team’s long-term planning have become increasingly significant.

Since their impressive run to the ODI World Cup final in 2023, India have struggled to maintain the same level of consistency in the 50-over format. Although the team lifted the Champions Trophy in 2025 under head coach Gautam Gambhir, a series of disappointing ODI defeats against Sri Lanka, Australia, and New Zealand have raised questions about the team’s direction heading into the next World Cup cycle.
India’s ODI captain Shubman Gill is still searching for his first bilateral series victory as skipper. His debut assignment in charge ended in a 2-1 home series defeat to New Zealand, adding further pressure on the young captain as he begins to shape the team’s future.

Interestingly, the BCCI was expected to announce the squad for the upcoming ODI tour of England on June 6. However, only the T20I squads were unveiled, prompting speculation about ongoing behind-the-scenes discussions regarding team composition and leadership plans.

According to a report by The Times of India, some senior players have remained in regular communication with key BCCI decision-makers to gain clarity on the strategy leading up to the 2027 ODI World Cup. The report suggests that greater alignment between the leadership group, selectors, and senior cricketers is needed to ensure a unified vision for the future.
The spotlight is also on Shubman Gill’s leadership style. Sources indicate that the young captain may need to adopt a stronger voice in the dressing room and establish his own authority alongside head coach Gautam Gambhir.

“With such big players in the team, Gill needs to have a stronger say in the dressing room. Gambhir has not got involved in the planning as intently as he has done in the other two formats,” a BCCI source reportedly said. As India shifts its focus toward the 2027 ODI World Cup, all eyes will be on how Gill and Gambhir work together to build a clear identity and direction for the team in the coming months.
