Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has addressed one of the most common perceptions surrounding Virat Kohli, offering a fascinating insight into the former Indian captain’s personality both on and off the field. Having worked closely with Kohli during one of the most successful periods in Indian cricket history, Shastri believes many people misunderstand the batting superstar.

Shastri and Kohli formed one of Indian cricket’s most successful captain-coach partnerships, helping the team achieve remarkable success across formats, particularly in Test cricket. Under their leadership, India became a dominant force at home and overseas, earning historic series wins and establishing a fearless brand of cricket.

In a video posted on the One8 YouTube channel, Ravi Shastri admitted that many of the labels attached to Kohli during matches are not entirely inaccurate. However, he stressed that those traits are visible only when Kohli is competing on the field. “Arrogant. Spoiled brat. Over the top. On edge. Everything true, but on the field. Totally the opposite off it. I love people who have the ability to switch on like that and then switch off,” Ravi Shastri said.

According to the former India coach, Kohli’s biggest strength is his ability to transform into a fierce competitor during games while remaining calm, grounded and approachable away from cricket. It is a quality that helped drive his success and inspired those around him during his tenure as captain.

Meanwhile, Kohli recently paid an emotional tribute to Kane Williamson after the New Zealand great announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a glorious 16-year career. Widely regarded as one of New Zealand’s greatest-ever batters, Williamson leaves the international stage after representing his country in 378 matches and building a legacy defined by consistency, class and leadership.

The friendship between Kohli and Williamson dates back to the 2008 Under-19 World Cup. Over the years, the two modern-day batting legends have faced off numerous times in international cricket and the IPL, while also developing a strong bond off the field.

Reacting to Williamson’s retirement, Kohli reflected on their long-standing friendship and mutual respect. “From an opponent to a friend over the years. It’s been a pleasure watching you bat and compete against you over so many years but more than that I value our friendship and shared perspectives on the game and beyond,” Kohli wrote on X. “I continue to cherish every time we speak or meet. Wishing you nothing but the best always brother. You’ve done your bit, you deserve to enjoy all of it now and put your feet up. Well done mate, life’s only just begun,” he added.

Kohli’s heartfelt message once again highlighted the respect that exists among cricket’s modern greats beyond the boundaries of competition.
