Despite another underwhelming outing with the bat, young India A opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi managed to grab the spotlight with a sensational catch during the fourth match of the ongoing ODI Tri-Series against Afghanistan A in Dambulla on Wednesday, June 17. The 15-year-old, who has faced criticism over his fielding in recent months, delivered a moment of brilliance in the field to silence many of his doubters.

Vaibhav produced the stunning effort in the sixth over of Afghanistan A’s chase. Bowling from one end, Anshul Kamboj induced an error from batter Khalid Taniwal, and Sooryavanshi responded with an outstanding catch to complete the dismissal. The sharp piece of fielding provided India A with an important breakthrough and quickly became one of the talking points of the match.
Sony Sports later shared the video on social media, where fans praised the youngster’s athleticism and awareness. While his fielding earned applause, Sooryavanshi’s struggles with the bat continued in the tournament.

The talented left-hander scored 38 runs from 28 deliveries against Afghanistan A, showing glimpses of his attacking ability but once again failing to convert a promising start into a substantial innings. Across four matches in the tri-series, he has accumulated 117 runs with scores of 14, 44, 21, and 38. Despite getting starts in most innings, a half-century has continued to elude him.

India A, however, posted a competitive total after being asked to bat first. The side finished with 319/9 in their allotted 50 overs thanks to several valuable contributions throughout the batting order. Priyansh Arya played an aggressive knock of 58, while Kumar Kushagra and Tilak Varma also registered half-centuries with scores of 58 and 59 respectively. Ruturaj Gaikwad chipped in with 30 runs, and Vipraj Nigam added a useful 30 lower down the order.

Although Sooryavanshi’s batting form remains a concern, his brilliant catch against Afghanistan A served as a timely reminder of his all-round potential.
