Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is closing in on the moment Indian cricket has been waiting for — a senior India debut, which now appears likely to come against Ireland this Friday. On Tuesday, the BCCI gave fans a first look at the 15-year-old in India blue, and the emotional reaction said everything about how big this moment is for him.

“Words cannot explain it,” Vaibhav Sooryavanshi said. “The reason I picked up a bat from day one and went to the cricket ground for practice, today that dream was fulfilled. The biggest step towards that journey was completed today. I truly cannot put this feeling into words.”

The BCCI’s video captured the special moment when Sooryavanshi received his India jersey. After Team India throwdown specialist Raghu knocked on his door, the teenager greeted him by touching his feet before opening the box. He carefully took out the jersey, held it in his hands and stared at it for a few seconds, clearly trying to absorb the reality of the moment.

For Sooryavanshi, this rise has been anything but ordinary. Just over a year ago, he burst onto the scene as the youngest IPL centurion, and since then he has only gone from strength to strength. From Australia to England to South Africa, the left-hander kept piling on the runs and building a reputation as one of Indian cricket’s most exciting young talents. He also delivered big in domestic cricket, producing record-breaking centuries in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy.

IPL 2026 was supposed to be the season where bowlers finally worked him out. Instead, Sooryavanshi scaled new heights. He finished with 776 runs and became the youngest Orange Cap winner in IPL history, finishing ahead of Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill and KL Rahul. At that point, the selectors had little choice but to fast-track him into the India setup for the T20I series against Ireland and England.

Ajit Agarkar later admitted that Sooryavanshi’s form left the selectors with no option but to reward him. The teenager then backed up that selection with a match-winning 94 for India A against Sri Lanka A in the tri-nation final.

If all goes to plan, Sooryavanshi is now only days away from one of Indian cricket’s most iconic milestones — becoming the youngest player ever to represent India, and possibly surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing record.
