Before finishing the India A Tri-Nation Series on a high, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi found himself at the centre of controversy during a league-stage clash against Sri Lanka A. The teenage batting sensation, who has rapidly emerged as one of Indian cricket’s brightest prospects, was involved in a heated altercation with Sri Lanka A cricketer Vishen Halambage during the match in Dambulla.

The incident drew significant attention after the two players exchanged words, which escalated into physical contact. Both cricketers appeared to shove each other, forcing teammates and officials to step in and calm the situation. While reports suggested disciplinary action could follow, no official sanctions have been announced so far.

However, Sooryavanshi ensured that his cricket did the talking when it mattered most. Facing the same opposition in the tournament final, the 15-year-old produced a breathtaking innings of 94 runs from just 29 deliveries. His explosive knock dismantled Sri Lanka A’s bowling attack and laid the foundation for India A’s title-winning triumph. The innings also earned him the Player of the Match award and reinforced his reputation as one of the most exciting young talents in world cricket.

Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar believes the incident could ultimately benefit Sooryavanshi’s development as a cricketer. According to Manjrekar, the youngster has already gained valuable experience in handling pressure situations and verbal battles on the field.

“I think Vaibhav has learnt his lesson, the sledging bit. He’ll know what to do. So that’s not a problem. He had first-hand experience in Sri Lanka, and he’ll handle that pretty well, because he seems a very aware, mature guy,” Sanjay Manjrekar told Mid-Day.

The timing of Sooryavanshi’s return to form could not have been better. The teenage opener has been selected in India’s T20I squad for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England, where he could become the youngest player to represent India in international cricket.

His selection comes on the back of a sensational IPL 2026 season, during which he scored 776 runs and became the youngest-ever Orange Cap winner in tournament history. Speaking about the youngster’s future, Sanjay Manjrekar expressed excitement over what lies ahead. “I’m very excited because I had a greater insight into him as a white-ball batter in the India ‘A’ series. And there is something about him that’s special,” he said.
