Indian cricket fans were treated to a special moment during the third T20I of the ongoing five-match series against England at Trent Bridge on Tuesday, as former India captain MS Dhoni made a rare public appearance at the venue on his 45th birthday. The sight of the legendary wicketkeeper-batter watching India in action instantly became one of the talking points of the night.

Dhoni, whose last international appearance also came in England, briefly spent time with fans before leaving the stadium. As he walked out surrounded by security, supporters gathered in large numbers to catch a glimpse of him, with loud chants of “Dhoni, Dhoni” echoing around Trent Bridge.

The two-time World Cup winner remains one of the most beloved figures in Indian cricket, and his presence added a nostalgic touch to an otherwise difficult evening for the visitors. The former India skipper, who turned 45 on Tuesday, was once expected to return to competitive cricket in IPL 2026.

However, fitness concerns kept him out of action, and there is still no clarity over whether he will feature again for the Chennai Super Kings next season. Even so, Dhoni’s legacy continues to grow, built on his journey from a fearless top-order batter to one of the finest finishers and captains the game has ever seen.

Under Dhoni’s leadership, India lifted three ICC trophies — the 2007 ICC World T20, the 2011 ODI World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy — a record that still sets him apart in world cricket.

For Indian fans, though, Dhoni’s appearance was a rare bright spot on a miserable night. India’s poor run after the T20 World Cup continued as they suffered a fourth straight defeat, collapsing to 76 all out in 11.4 overs while chasing England’s massive 201/7. On a pitch that allowed England to score freely, India never recovered after losing early wickets.

The defeat drew a blunt reaction from captain Shreyas Iyer, who called the performance “atrocious,” while head coach Gautam Gambhir admitted that the team had not adapted well to the conditions. The 125-run loss was also India’s heaviest defeat by runs in T20I history, surpassing their previous worst margin of 80 runs against New Zealand in February 2019.
