India posted a fighting total of 158/7 after batting first in the fourth T20I against England at the County Ground in Bristol on Thursday, July 9, but the score looked below par after another shaky batting display from the visitors. The innings once again began on a poor note as openers Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Abhishek Sharma failed to provide India with momentum inside the powerplay.

Suryavanshi was dismissed for 15, while Abhishek made 16. Ishan Kishan also perished cheaply for just four runs, leaving India under pressure early in the innings. Skipper Shreyas Iyer and Shivam Dube tried to repair the damage with a 53-run partnership, offering India some hope of a competitive total. However, Dube could not carry on for long and was dismissed for 22. Tilak Varma managed only 11, while Washington Sundar added just five, as India continued to lose wickets at regular intervals.

Amid the collapse around him, Iyer stood tall and played a captain’s knock. The India skipper remained unbeaten on 80 off 49 balls, striking four boundaries and five sixes at a strike rate of 163.27. He held the innings together from one end and ensured India at least reached a defendable total.
For a while, India appeared set for a much stronger finish. They were 150/5 at the end of the 18th over and had the platform to push beyond 170. But the last two overs produced only eight runs, a disappointing finish that drew heavy criticism from fans on social media.

Several supporters took to X to slam India’s batting effort, with many pointing out the lack of boundaries at the death. One fan wrote that there was “nothing more depressing than batting by India” lately, while another called the finishing “pathetic” and said only Iyer had managed to get going.
Just realising … that of late there is nothing more depressing than batting by India…! Bad display with no improvement… not withstanding our opening strength !

Ordinary batting from India in Bristol.
Barring Shreyas Iyer, none of the others had conviction.
Insecurity in the dressing room, or struggling to deal with these conditions? #ENGvsIND

Is it enough for England inform batting lineup?

India’s total also looked light considering the conditions at Bristol, where the average first-innings score since 2025 has been 166. With England’s batting line-up in strong form, the Men in Blue will now need a special bowling effort to defend 158 and stay alive in the five-match series.
India trail 0-2 after three completed matches. The first game was washed out by rain, while England won the next two contests by four wickets and 125 runs. Another defeat in Bristol would hand England the series and leave Shreyas Iyer’s side with more questions than answers.
