BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has confirmed that the board will hold a review meeting with the core group of India’s T20 setup after the ongoing tour of England ends. The move comes in the wake of India’s poor run in the shortest format since their title-winning campaign at the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
India have played six T20Is since the international calendar resumed and have lost five, with one match washed out by rain. Those results have led to back-to-back bilateral series defeats, including a shocking first-ever T20I loss to Ireland last month. The slide has put the team management under the scanner, even as the board has resisted any immediate reaction.
Speaking to PTI on Friday, Saikia admitted that the BCCI has taken note of the team’s struggles against England. “The BCCI is currently observing the performance of the Indian T20 team, which has not been up to the mark in the ongoing series against England,” he said.

At the same time, Saikia made it clear that the board is not planning a knee-jerk response. PTI reported that head coach Gautam Gambhir’s position is safe for now. Saikia said the team is going through a difficult phase, but stressed that such spells are part of international cricket.
“However, this is not something abnormal and can happen in international cricket. We consider it as a purely bad phase. Once the ODI series gets over on July 19 and the team comes back, we will have a review meeting with core members of the team to discuss what went wrong in England. Since there is an ODI series, we are hoping that the team will be back in good form,” he said.

Saikia also underlined that the review will focus only on performance and tactical correction. “This will strictly be about the performance of the team and how course correction can be done with regards to shortfalls. Nothing else will be discussed,” he added.
The meeting is expected to include Gambhir and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar. It is still unclear whether T20I captain Shreyas Iyer will be present, as he may leave for Zimbabwe for the next three-match series.

The development comes only months after India became the first team to win three ICC Men’s T20 World Cups. Despite the recent slump, Gambhir is not expected to face any drastic action as the BCCI looks at the bigger picture.
