India’s white-ball captain, Shubman Gill, has received one of the biggest off-field honours in world sport after being invited to watch the Wimbledon 2026 Championships from the prestigious Royal Box. With this invitation, Gill becomes only the fourth Indian cricket captain to enjoy the privilege, joining the elite company of Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma.

Reserved for royalty, global sporting icons, political leaders, and distinguished personalities, the Royal Box at Wimbledon is among the most exclusive seating areas in international sport. Gill’s invitation reflects his growing stature on the global sporting stage as he continues to establish himself as one of India’s premier cricket leaders.
The 26-year-old is currently in England with the Indian team ahead of the upcoming three-match ODI series against England. Despite a busy international schedule, Gill has also taken time to experience some of Britain’s biggest sporting events during the tour.

Earlier this week, the Indian skipper attended the Formula 1 British Grand Prix at Silverstone as a VIP guest, witnessing his first-ever F1 race. During the visit, Gill explored the paddock, interacted with members of the Formula 1 fraternity, and enjoyed exclusive behind-the-scenes access usually reserved for drivers, teams, and special guests. The experience offered him a closer look at one of the world’s most prestigious motorsport events.

Gill will now shift his complete focus back to cricket as India prepares for the ODI leg of their England tour. The right-handed opener returns to the format after leading India to a dominant 3-0 series sweep over Afghanistan at home earlier this year.
The Punjab batter was in sensational touch during that series, finishing as India’s standout performer. He began with an unbeaten 84 in the opening ODI before producing a magnificent 154 in the second match. In the final game, Gill promoted team balance by moving himself down the batting order as India completed a comfortable nine-wicket victory to seal the clean sweep.

Before the ODI series begins, India will face England in the fifth and final T20I in Southampton. Once the shortest-format contest concludes, Gill will take charge of the ODI side, hoping to continue his impressive run as captain while carrying his outstanding batting form into another crucial white-ball assignment.
