Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has launched a strong criticism of head coach Gautam Gambhir and the Indian team management following India’s humiliating 0-4 T20I series defeat against England. The crushing loss not only marked India’s second consecutive bilateral T20I series defeat after the Ireland tour but also saw the Men in Blue surrender the No. 1 spot in the ICC T20I rankings.

Team India is going through a nightmare

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Kaif admitted that defeats are part of international cricket but argued that what concerned him most was India’s lack of competitiveness throughout the tour. According to the former batter, the team never looked settled, with constant changes to the playing XI preventing players from building confidence and consistency.

“There is nothing wrong with losing. But it is the way we played. From the Ireland series to England, we were never really in the contest. I wanted to praise the team, but I couldn’t find a single moment to do so. The management itself doesn’t know its best XI. I can’t remember seeing so many changes under any previous Indian team management. It looked like a club-level tournament where the playing XI changed every match,” Mohammad Kaif said.

Kaif was particularly critical of the handling of Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. He questioned why the management failed to accommodate all three in the same playing XI despite India’s struggles at the top of the order.

The former India batter pointed out that Samson was dropped after limited opportunities before being recalled for the final T20I, despite not being selected for the upcoming Zimbabwe series. He also questioned why Sooryavanshi was left out of the series finale after receiving just three matches to prove himself.

“You should have found a way to play Abhishek, Samson and Vaibhav together. Samson was dropped after just one game against England despite his past success against them in the T20 World Cup. If he wasn’t in your plans for Zimbabwe, then why bring him back for the final match instead of continuing with Vaibhav? There have been too many confusing decisions,” Mohammad Kaif remarked.

The former World Cup winner also defended Sooryavanshi, insisting that the 15-year-old deserved a longer run in the side. He argued that England’s challenging conditions would test any young batter and reminded viewers that the teenager’s outstanding IPL campaign should not be forgotten after a handful of failures.

Kaif reiterated his earlier opinion that Sooryavanshi should have made his India debut during the Ireland series rather than being thrown into the tougher English conditions. He further claimed that India’s recent defeats under Gambhir were becoming a worrying trend, referencing previous disappointing results against teams like New Zealand and South Africa. According to Kaif, the coaching staff has yet to establish a clear identity or selection strategy since taking charge.

The former batter also criticized the management’s approach to balancing youth and experience. He highlighted Shreyas Iyer’s composed performances against England as an example of why experienced players continue to play a crucial role in overseas conditions. At the same time, Kaif accused the management of sending mixed signals by moving away from senior players while also failing to back young cricketers for an extended period.

“Experience matters because players understand the conditions and opposition better. You have removed experienced players, yet you are also not giving youngsters enough opportunities. Suryakumar Yadav has scored a T20I hundred in England, while Vaibhav was dropped after just three games. I don’t understand the direction this team is heading,” he said.

India will now attempt to recover from the disappointing England tour when they face Zimbabwe in a three-match T20I series beginning on July 23 in Harare. However, with consecutive series defeats coming just months after lifting the T20 World Cup, questions surrounding Gautam Gambhir’s leadership, team selection and long-term vision are only expected to intensify.
