Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are entering one of the most defining phases in the franchise’s history as they prepare for life after long-serving head coach Stephen Fleming. While finding Fleming’s successor is a major challenge in itself, Ashwin feels the presence of MS Dhoni makes the decision even more delicate.

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Ashwin said CSK must first gain clarity on Dhoni’s future role before appointing a new head coach. According to the veteran spinner, Dhoni has always been the central figure in the franchise’s decision-making process, despite Fleming officially holding the head coach’s position for nearly two decades.
Ashwin revealed that during his time with the franchise, Dhoni was the “alpha” personality, while Fleming expertly complemented the former India captain by supporting his leadership rather than competing with it. Because of this unique dynamic, Ashwin believes CSK should seriously consider whether Dhoni is willing to transition into the head coach’s role.

“I think it’s time for Chennai Super Kings to look beyond Stephen Fleming, but this is a fascinating period for the franchise,” Ravichandran Ashwin said. “The biggest question is who takes over next. If Mahendra Singh Dhoni is ready to become the head coach, there is no better candidate. However, if he isn’t interested, CSK must appoint someone capable of working independently and taking full responsibility for the team’s decisions.”
Dhoni did not feature in IPL 2026 due to injury concerns, but he has not announced his retirement from the tournament. Taking over as head coach would almost certainly require him to step away from playing, and there has been no indication that he is ready to make that transition.

Ashwin further explained that Dhoni’s influence within the CSK dressing room extends far beyond his role as captain. From team selection and squad planning to tactical discussions, the former wicketkeeper has consistently played a major part in shaping the franchise’s cricketing decisions. He described Dhoni as more of a mentor whose presence has guided the team’s culture for years.
The former spinner added that CSK now face a defining choice. They can either build a coaching setup around Dhoni, allowing him to remain the primary decision-maker, or appoint a strong, independent head coach with complete authority over the team’s direction.

According to Ashwin, the franchise must strike the right balance between preserving the legacy that has made CSK one of the IPL’s most successful teams and embracing a new leadership structure capable of driving the next chapter. How the Super Kings handle this transition could shape the team’s future for years to come.
