The club-versus-country debate has once again taken centre stage after England legend Alastair Cook questioned Jacob Bethell’s decision to remain with Royal Challengers Bengaluru during IPL 2026 instead of returning home to play county cricket ahead of England’s Test series against New Zealand. Bethell, regarded as one of England’s brightest batting prospects, honoured his IPL contract with RCB before linking up with the national team, where he featured in all three Tests against New Zealand.

The young left-hander played seven of RCB’s 16 matches during their successful IPL title defence, scoring 96 runs at a strike rate of 124.67. While his contribution was limited on the field, the discussion soon shifted from statistics to a broader debate over whether franchise cricket should take priority over international preparation, especially for emerging players.

Cook’s remarks sparked strong reactions across the cricketing world. Former England captain Kevin Pietersen was among the first to disagree, arguing that simply being part of an IPL dressing room alongside some of the world’s best cricketers offers invaluable learning opportunities, even if a player spends time on the bench.

Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik, who now serves as RCB’s mentor, also defended Bethell’s decision and stressed the importance of respecting franchise commitments. “You say he was just sitting there, warming the bench,” Karthik said on The Overlap Cricket podcast. “Now, he has a contract with RCB, which he chose to be part of. How do you dishonour that contract because you’re warming the bench?”

Karthik also questioned the consequences if players began walking away from franchise deals simply because they were not selected in the playing XI.

“If every player decides, ‘If you drop me, I am going back home,’ where does that leave the tournament?” he asked. “You know Phil Salt is there. I might not play, so I should get back home. That decision has to be made before you enter the auction, not after you sign the contract. If you commit to a franchise, you have to honour that commitment. You can’t suddenly say, ‘I’m not playing, so I want to go home.'”

Alastair Cook, however, remained firm in his stance, insisting that representing England should always take precedence over franchise cricket.

“I think English cricket is more important than the IPL or any franchise. That’s what I believe,” Alastair Cook said. “Apparently, I’m not allowed to think that because the IPL is the best tournament in the world.”

Alastair Cook explained that his concern centred around Bethell’s long-term development rather than criticism of RCB.

“Jacob Bethell sat on the bench the year before and learnt from those players. Now he’s sitting on the bench again and not playing. He’s my No. 3 for the England side I desperately want to see succeed. No disrespect to RCB or any franchise, but England comes first. He is an outstanding talent and could become one of England’s most important batters over the next decade after Joe Root. I don’t think it’s ideal that he’s heading into a tough Test series against New Zealand without enough red-ball cricket behind him.”
