Vaibhav Sooryavanshi reminded the cricketing world why he is regarded as one of the brightest young talents in the game with a sensational maiden T20I half-century in India’s commanding victory over Zimbabwe in the opening match of the three-match series at the Harare Sports Club. After a quiet start to his international career, the 15-year-old produced a fearless batting display that earned praise from captain Shreyas Iyer and helped India secure a comfortable win.
Sooryavanshi had managed scores of 14, 13 and 15 in his first three T20I innings against England, but the left-handed opener looked like a completely different batter in Harare. Chasing a modest target of 126, he attacked Zimbabwe’s bowlers from the outset, racing to his maiden international fifty in just 18 deliveries. His explosive innings featured four boundaries and four towering sixes, laying the perfect foundation for India to chase down the target inside 14 overs.
Following the emphatic victory, India captain Shreyas Iyer was full of praise for the teenage sensation, describing his fearless approach as the defining feature of the innings. “Exceptional batting by him,” Iyer said after the match. “He’s a fearless youngster and the way he approached this innings was phenomenal.”

The India skipper also pointed out that Sooryavanshi’s familiarity with the Harare Sports Club played a role in his confident display. Earlier this year, the youngster had smashed a memorable 175 in the Under-19 World Cup final at the same venue, making his return to Harare a special one.
“So, yeah, I think he’s played here before, so he’s got a fair idea about how the wickets are. He’s got 175, I guess, in the Under-19 final, so he definitely possesses immense confidence when he steps onto the field. So, good to see it today. Good start to the series,” Shreyas Iyer added.

The victory also marked a significant milestone for Iyer, who registered his first win as India’s T20I captain after enduring seven consecutive matches without a victory during tours of Ireland and England. “Exceptional. They were tremendous in terms of execution and me getting my first win, I can’t be happier,” Iyer said.
India’s bowlers had earlier laid the platform for the victory by restricting Zimbabwe to a below-par total after reducing the hosts to 32/4 and later 64/5. Iyer credited the fast bowlers, especially Mayank Yadav, for exploiting the bounce available on the Harare surface.

“I was anticipating the bounce and there was a decent amount of bounce on this wicket, especially from the hard length. But an exceptional start was given by Mayank, the way he bowled in terms of executing his line and length and not giving them room to score runs. I think that was very critical for us,” he explained.
Despite Zimbabwe recovering through valuable partnerships to post a competitive total, Iyer dismissed concerns that India had allowed the hosts back into the contest. Instead, he viewed the middle overs as an opportunity to rotate his bowling attack and give every player valuable match time ahead of the remaining two games.
“In every team there is going to be a batter who is going to take the team to the hilt and post a decent total,” Shreyas Iyer said. “I think they analysed the wicket pretty well and they started building partnerships. That was when I wanted to rotate my bowlers as well and see to it that they get decent rhythm because we’re going to play two more matches over here. Everyone getting chances to bowl and bat gives a lot of confidence to them as well.”
With Sooryavanshi announcing himself on the international stage and India’s young bowling unit delivering another disciplined performance, the visitors have taken an early 1-0 lead and will head into the remaining matches of the series with renewed confidence.
