India vice-captain Tilak Varma silenced his critics with a breathtaking unbeaten half-century in the second T20I against Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club on Saturday. After India won the toss and elected to bat first, the left-hander produced a match-defining innings that powered the visitors to a commanding total.

Walking in around the halfway stage of the innings, Tilak wasted little time settling in. He announced his intent by smashing a boundary off just the second ball he faced before briefly taking time to assess the conditions. Once set, the stylish left-hander shifted gears effortlessly, dismantling the Zimbabwe bowling attack with an array of attacking strokes.

Tilak reached his fifty in just 23 deliveries, delivering a timely reminder of his explosive batting ability. The knock came at an important stage of his career, especially after facing criticism in recent months for struggling to accelerate against spin and pace in the middle overs. His fearless approach immediately drew praise from fans, with many describing the innings as the perfect response to those questioning his strike rate and finishing ability.

The vice-captain also shared a match-changing fourth-wicket partnership with Ishan Kishan, who continued his excellent form with a brilliant 81 off 44 deliveries. The pair added 94 runs in only 43 balls, with Tilak contributing 50 off 23 deliveries during the stand while Kishan blasted 41 off just 21 balls in the partnership. Earlier, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi gave India a flying start with 20 off nine balls, while captain Shreyas Iyer chipped in with a valuable 25 off 20 deliveries.

India’s total of 219/5 marked the ninth occasion in 2026 that the team crossed the 200-run mark in a men’s T20I. Already leading the three-match series 1-0, the Men in Blue put themselves in a strong position to defend the massive total and clinch the series with another dominant performance.
