India opener Abhishek Sharma endured another disappointing outing as Zimbabwe struck early in the second T20I at the Harare Sports Club on Saturday, July 25. Fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani removed the left-hander for just eight runs off eight deliveries, handing the hosts a crucial breakthrough after India elected to bat first.

The dismissal once again highlighted Abhishek’s recent inconsistency at the international level. Looking to counterattack, the southpaw failed to make the most of his start, adding to concerns over his form in T20I cricket. Following the wicket, several fans took to social media to criticize his aggressive approach, with many questioning whether he needs to show greater patience during the early stages of his innings.

The breakthrough came courtesy of a well-executed delivery from Muzarabani. Bowling a back-of-a-length ball that climbed sharply and moved away from the batter, the Zimbabwe pacer forced Abhishek into an uncomfortable poke outside the off stump. The edge flew straight to Ryan Burl at backward point, who completed a comfortable catch before Muzarabani celebrated with an animated fist pump.

Abhishek’s recent numbers paint a worrying picture. Across his last 15 completed T20I innings, he has managed only four scores of fifty or more, while struggling to convert promising starts into substantial contributions. His last 16 innings for India read: 8(8), 1(8), 3(5), 16(14), 10(7), 43(24), 59(24), 0(1), 50(20), 52(21), 9(7), 10(11), 55(30), 15(12), 0(3), and 0(4). The inconsistency has raised fresh questions about his place at the top of India’s batting order.

One of the biggest challenges for Abhishek has been facing Blessing Muzarabani. The Zimbabwe speedster has consistently troubled the Indian opener in T20 internationals, winning their battle on multiple occasions. Across their meetings, Abhishek has scored only eight runs from 21 deliveries against Muzarabani and has been dismissed three times.

The statistics underline the extent of the pacer’s dominance. Abhishek averages just 2.66 against Muzarabani while striking at only 38.09. Even more concerning is his inability to rotate the strike, having played out 16 dot balls from the 21 deliveries he has faced against the tall right-arm quick.

Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik also questioned Abhishek’s repeated attacking dismissals after another failure, while legendary commentator Ian Bishop suggested that the young opener appears short of confidence at the crease. With the series still alive, Abhishek Sharma will be eager to silence his critics and rediscover the fearless batting that made him one of India’s most exciting T20 prospects.
