India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka due to a left knee injury, dealing a significant blow to the team’s ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 campaign. The series begins on August 15 in Galle, with uncapped pacer Auqib Nabi named as Bumrah’s replacement.

The 31-year-old has been carefully managing his workload since the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Bumrah made his long-awaited return to ODI cricket during India’s recent series against England, his first appearance in the format after 968 days. However, his comeback was short-lived as he suffered knee discomfort while fielding during the Cardiff ODI and was forced to miss the series finale.

Although Bumrah was initially included in India’s squad for the Sri Lanka tour subject to clearing a fitness assessment, the BCCI medical team ultimately ruled him out. He is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, where he reportedly received an injection last month in an effort to accelerate his recovery.

Former India fast bowler Karsan Ghavri believes the recurring injury setbacks are a warning sign and has urged the BCCI to prioritise Bumrah’s long-term fitness over short-term availability. According to Ghavri, the star pacer should be given a lengthy break, even if it means staying away from competitive cricket for six months or longer.

“Bumrah should take a break for five to six months or even a year and return only when he is completely fit,” Karsan Ghavri told Mid-day. He added that repeatedly selecting Bumrah before he is fully recovered only increases the risk of another breakdown during important tournaments.

Ghavri also called for the return of experienced seamers Mohammed Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, pointing out that both have remained fit and performed consistently in the IPL. He believes their experience would strengthen India’s pace attack while reducing the burden on Bumrah.

Echoing similar concerns, former India pacer Raju Kulkarni suggested that Bumrah should be preserved exclusively for Test cricket. He argued that expecting the right-arm quick to play across all three formats, along with the IPL, is no longer a sustainable approach given his injury history.

Kulkarni proposed using Bhuvneshwar Kumar primarily in T20Is while rotating Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj in the Test side. Such a strategy, he believes, would allow India to better manage their fast-bowling resources without placing excessive workload on Bumrah.

With India’s pace attack once again under the spotlight, Bumrah’s latest injury has reignited the debate over workload management. As the team prepares for a crucial Test series in Sri Lanka, ensuring the long-term fitness of its premier fast bowler could prove just as important as immediate results.
