New England Test head coach Stephen Fleming has reportedly approached former Australia batter Michael Hussey about the possibility of joining the England coaching setup as batting coach. Fleming, who was appointed England’s Test coach on July 30, 2026, is scheduled to officially begin his tenure ahead of the team’s Test tour of South Africa in December.

According to reports, Hussey is yet to make a final decision on the offer. The 51-year-old is currently working as head coach of Welsh Fire in The Hundred, and any move to England’s national setup would need to fit around his existing coaching commitments.

Fleming’s interest in Hussey is hardly surprising given the pair’s long-standing partnership at Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. The duo spent nearly 15 years together, with Fleming leading the franchise as head coach while Hussey first starred as a dependable batter before transitioning into an assistant coaching role. Their successful collaboration helped CSK establish itself as one of the IPL’s most consistent franchises, making Hussey a natural candidate for Fleming’s support staff.

Since retiring from international cricket in 2012, Hussey has built an impressive coaching résumé across various T20 leagues. His vast experience, tactical understanding, and reputation for developing batters have made him one of the most respected coaches in franchise cricket, qualities that England are keen to add to their Test setup.

While Fleming prepares to take charge later this year, former England opener Marcus Trescothick will continue as interim head coach for the upcoming home Test series against Pakistan, which begins on August 19. David Saker is also expected to remain England’s bowling coach for that assignment.

Meanwhile, England’s long-term coaching structure is still taking shape. Reports from South Africa have suggested that Fleming could also approach former Chennai Super Kings bowling coach Eric Simons to strengthen the backroom staff. However, no official confirmation has been made, and discussions over England’s permanent coaching team are expected to continue before the South Africa tour later this year.
