India’s promising left-handed batter Sai Sudharsan remains on course to feature in the upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka despite not travelling with the rest of the Indian squad earlier this week. The 24-year-old is currently completing his rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru and is expected to join the team in Colombo on Saturday, August 8.

According to a report by Cricbuzz, Sudharsan’s recovery from a minor big toe injury is progressing well. While the Tamil Nadu batter is set to miss India’s three-day warm-up match against a Sri Lanka XI, beginning on August 7, he is expected to regain full fitness ahead of the opening Test, which starts at the Galle International Cricket Stadium on August 15.

Sudharsan has already resumed batting at the Centre of Excellence, with the BCCI medical staff closely monitoring his progress. If he continues to recover as expected, he is likely to receive medical clearance and link up with the Indian squad before the Test series gets underway.

The left-hander has quickly established himself as one of India’s brightest red-ball prospects since making his Test debut against England at Headingley in June 2025. In just seven Test appearances, Sudharsan has scored 383 runs and impressed with his composure at the crease. One of his standout performances came in the one-off Test against Afghanistan earlier this year, where he struck a fluent 81 while batting at No. 3.

His recent form in Sri Lankan conditions has further strengthened his case for a place in India’s playing XI. Representing India A during the June-July tour, Sudharsan dominated the hosts with the bat. He scored a superb 132 in the first unofficial Test before following it up with a magnificent 168 in the second four-day match in Galle. He also remained unbeaten in both second innings, highlighting his consistency and ability to bat long under challenging conditions.

If declared fit, Sudharsan is expected to occupy the crucial No. 3 position in India’s batting order for the Sri Lanka series. However, should his recovery suffer any setback, Karnataka batter Devdutt Padikkal is likely to step into the role as India look to begin their World Test Championship campaign in Sri Lanka on a strong note.
