Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has weighed in on Rohit Sharma’s current position after the Indian batter produced a memorable knock at Lord’s on July 19, 2026. Rohit scored an unbeaten 138 in India’s chase of 388 during the third ODI, though the visitors eventually fell short by 27 runs as England wrapped up the series 2-1. The innings was a reminder of Rohit’s class, with the right-hander bringing up his 34th ODI hundred and his first of 2026 off just 84 balls, decorated with 17 fours and five sixes.

Kaif said the most striking part of the current conversation around Rohit Sharma is the lack of a clear public statement from the Indian team management about his long-term role. While members of the coaching staff have repeatedly spoken about giving Rohit the freedom to play his natural game, there has still been no firm declaration that he is part of India’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

“Yes, one thing has become clear. At times, members of the coaching staff come out and say, ‘We have given Rohit Sharma complete freedom to play his natural game.’ But nobody has yet made a clear statement saying, ‘Rohit Sharma is part of our plans for the 2027 World Cup,'” Mohammad Kaif said on his YouTube channel.

Kaif added that Rohit’s future has become clouded by uncertainty because no one from the management has stepped forward to back him publicly in unequivocal terms. He explained that a player of Rohit’s stature will naturally have ups and downs in form, but the team environment should make it clear that the support remains intact.

“Rohit Sharma’s form will naturally go up and down. He may have a poor series, but the management must say that it is standing behind him. Along with giving him freedom, they should also clearly say that they support him,” he said.

The former India batter also addressed the speculation that followed the Lord’s ODI, particularly the reports that suggested it could have been Rohit’s final appearance in the format. Kaif stressed that such reports were only possibilities, not confirmed decisions, and praised the BCCI for stepping in at the right time to stop the rumours from dominating the conversation.

“Twice, he has taken the decision himself. The report that the Lord’s match could be his final ODI was also framed as a possibility. There was a question mark attached to it,” Mohammad Kaif said. “The BCCI did a very good job by making a statement before the Lord’s match. That intervention became a turning point.”

According to Mohammad Kaif, the board’s intervention ensured that cricket remained the focus at Lord’s instead of speculation around Rohit’s future. He added that without the statement, visual cues and social media chatter would have amplified the retirement narrative even further.

Rohit’s century at Lord’s also created history, making him the first male India batter to score an ODI hundred at the venue. India captain Shubman Gill had already clarified that Rohit had not communicated any retirement decision to the dressing room, but questions over his future selection are likely to continue until the management offers a more definitive stance on his role in the run-up to future ICC events.
