England selector Marcus North has explained the decision to appoint Joe Root as the new Test captain, insisting that Harry Brook remains central to the team’s long-term leadership plans despite missing out on the role. Root was officially named England’s Test skipper on July 31, 2026, making a surprise return to the position more than four years after stepping down in 2022.

The experienced batter will lead England during the upcoming three-match home Test series against Pakistan, beginning later this month. While many expected Brook to take charge after his impressive rise as England’s white-ball captain, the selectors opted for Root’s vast experience as they prepare for a crucial phase in Test cricket.

Speaking about the appointment, Marcus North praised Brook’s leadership qualities and highlighted the progress he has made since taking over England’s limited-overs sides. Under Brook’s captaincy, England climbed to the No. 1 spot in the ICC T20I rankings during the 2026 season, underlining his growing influence within the national setup.

“I think Harry Brook has been a fantastic player for us across all three formats. He remains an incredibly important part of this team, and his leadership in white-ball cricket continues to mature with every series. We’ve seen that reflected in England reaching the No. 1 ranking in T20Is this summer,” Marcus North said.

However, the selector stressed that captaining across all three formats places a significant physical and mental burden on any player. With England targeting success at the 2027 ODI World Cup, the management believes Brook should continue focusing on white-ball cricket while working closely with head coach Brendan McCullum.

North also dismissed suggestions that Brook has fallen out of the Test captaincy race. Instead, he described Root’s appointment as the ideal short-term solution, given his experience and proven leadership record.

“I have no doubt Harry’s time will come. But we’re fortunate to have someone of Joe Root’s experience available to lead the Test side again. Harry can continue developing as a leader in white-ball cricket while preparing for bigger responsibilities in the future,” Marcus North added.

England hope Root’s return as captain will provide stability and experience as they begin a new chapter in Test cricket against Pakistan.
