India captain Shubman Gill produced a moment of brilliance in the field to deepen Sri Lanka’s troubles on Day 3 of the first Test at the Galle International Cricket Stadium on Monday. With India already dominating proceedings through disciplined bowling, Gill’s spectacular one-handed catch at extra cover sent Kamindu Mendis back to the pavilion and handed the visitors complete control of the contest.

The stunning dismissal came on the very first ball of the 17th over. Kuldeep Yadav tossed up a tempting delivery, and Mendis advanced down the pitch before driving it firmly towards extra cover. The shot appeared destined to beat the fielder, but Gill had other ideas. Reacting instantly, the Indian skipper dived full length to his left and plucked the ball out of the air with one hand, completing one of the finest catches of the match.

Gill ensured the ball remained secure even after landing on the turf before celebrating passionately. The catch left teammates, commentators, and fans in disbelief. Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar, who was on commentary duty, described it as a remarkable effort and praised Gill’s athleticism, calling it one of the best catches seen in that region of the field.

The catch capped a dominant opening session for India. After being bowled out for 462 in their first innings, the visitors wasted no time making inroads into Sri Lanka’s batting lineup. Mohammed Siraj struck in the opening over, dismissing Nishan Madushka for a duck, while left-arm spinner Manav Suthar removed both Dinesh Chandimal and Lahiru Udara to put the hosts under immense pressure.

Kuldeep Yadav claimed the wicket of Mendis, but the breakthrough owed plenty to Gill’s exceptional fielding effort. The dismissal left Sri Lanka struggling as India tightened their grip on the Test match.

Earlier, India’s commanding first-innings total was built around a magnificent 167 from Devdutt Padikkal. KL Rahul contributed a patient 82, while Dhruv Jurel added a valuable half-century to push India beyond the 450-run mark despite rain interruptions.
