India’s second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo has been marked by dominant batting displays as well as a growing injury list. After Rishabh Pant missed wicketkeeping duties because of a shoulder issue, India faced another worrying moment on Day 4 when Mohammed Siraj suffered a brief injury scare.

With Jasprit Bumrah unavailable for the Sri Lanka series, Siraj has taken responsibility for leading India’s pace attack. His presence has been particularly important to the visitors, making his leaving the field after an awkward fall a major concern for captain Shubman Gill and the Indian team management.

The incident occurred during the 11th over of Sri Lanka’s innings. Manav Suthar bowled a slightly shorter delivery to Pasindu Sooriyabandara, who had been repeatedly using the sweep against the left-arm spinner. The change in length produced the desired result, as Sooriyabandara mistimed the shot and generated a leading edge towards the mid-wicket region.

Siraj was stationed at deep mid-wicket and immediately moved towards the ball in an attempt to complete the catch. He stretched forward and dived, getting both hands to the opportunity. However, the Indian pacer could not hold on to the difficult chance.

The bigger concern came moments later when Siraj remained on the ground and appeared to be clutching his rib area. He seemed to land awkwardly while completing the dive, prompting the Indian physios to rush onto the field to assess the situation.

Siraj subsequently walked off the field, raising concerns about whether he would be able to continue bowling. His absence would have placed additional responsibility on Prasidh Krishna, particularly with India already missing Bumrah for the series.

Siraj has been an important part of India’s bowling plans throughout the series. Although his wicket tally has not been particularly high, he has consistently created pressure and provided India with early breakthroughs. His experience and ability to bowl long spells make him a key component of the pace attack.

Fortunately for India, the injury scare did not prove serious. Siraj returned to the field shortly after receiving precautionary medical attention, easing concerns within the Indian camp.

His return was a significant relief for Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir, as India avoided another major injury setback during a Test in which several players have already dealt with fitness issues. With Siraj back on the field, India retained greater depth and experience in their bowling attack as they continued their push for victory in Colombo.
